BIG MONEY EURO BONUS FOR CELTS

Celtic boss Gordon Strachan

By Scott Burns

Celtic's stars will share a £1 million plus bonus before they even kick a ball in the Champions League.

Express Sport can reveal that every single one of Gordon Strachan’s players registered for the knock-out stages will receive £50,000 each.

The fee agreed by Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell was the same figure as the team received for getting to the same stage, by beating Spartak Moscow, last season.

This time, though, the fact the Scottish champions go directly into the lucrative group sections means they didn’t have the concerns of a tricky qualifier.

Strachan’s squad could boost their bonuses further with positive results against European champions Manchester United, Villarreal and Danish title winners Aalborg and by making into the knock-out stages for a third consecutive season.

That money though will be a drop in the ocean for Celtic who can expect to earn in excess of £12 million, as Scotland’s sole representative in the Champions League.

The Hoops were handed an additional £2 million of that figure as part of the television revenues after Rangers crashed out in the first qualifier to FBK Kaunas.

Many Celtic fans are well aware what their team will pick up from their Champions League run and that is a major reason why their has been major criticism towards Lawwell, over his reluctance to open the purse strings in the last transfer window.

Celtic spent a fraction of their Old Firm rivals Rangers, bringing in Glenn Loovens, Shaun Maloney, Paddy McCourt and Marc Crosas.
