By Iain Macfarlane

Craig Gordon last night declared George Burley's decision to stick with him for the World Cup campaign is in Scotland's best interests.

The Sunderland keeper is being put under severe pressure for the number one jersey by in-form Rangers ace Allan McGregor.

However, Burley will keep faith with the more experienced Gordon for the double header against Macedonia and Iceland and the 31-times capped keeper feels that a settled defence is key to the success of the team.

The 25-year-old admitted: "You have to get an understanding with the back four.

"You have to know what each other is going to do and if you keep chopping and changing then you're not going to get the same undersdtanding that you would with a constant selection.

"I don't think that's the way forward.

"Both of us will say we want to play, but there's only one position available and it's up to both of us to fight it out for that place.

Gordon believes that the working relationship he has built up with Celtic pairing Stephen Mcmanus and Gary Caldwell is invaluable as Scotland try and get off to a flier against Macedonia tomorrow and Iceland on Wednesday.
