SKIPPER Stephen McManus last night insisted Scotland’s all or nothing bonus system proves glory not greed motivates George Burley’s World Cup hopefuls.

Old Firm captains McManus and Barry Ferguson thrashed out a deal on behalf of the squad with SFA chief executive Gordon Smith during a FIVE minute meeting at Hampden last month Scotland’s heroes – who kick off the World Cup qualifying campaign today in Macedonia – will effectively play for nothing if they fail to make the 2010 Finals.

If the squad do make it to South Africa then they will share in the SFA’s expected £15 million cash windfall.

Mick said: “It was a brilliant meeting. Five minutes and it was done.

“You want to play football and win caps.

“You want to look back 20 years after you’ve retired and think about the caps, not how much you’ve earned on international duty.”

SFA chief Smith praised the players’ stance and added: “It’s a fantastic attitude to only want a bonus for success.

“In terms of the money – it could save the national association cash in the short-term which can be spent in other areas.

“It’s great we have a bunch of players who continue to show this attitude.

“It’s an exciting time at the start of a new campaign and we have to be positive about it.

“Results will dictate the campaign but I feel we can all be hopeful as we start the campaign.

“We’ll try to win the group. Holland will be favourites, but if we’re not good enough to win we’ll fight for second place and that play-off.”
